Operation Hongqi(紅旗) was a military action jointly undertaken on 1973 by military forces from the People's Republic of China and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, shortly after the first BETA Hive landing unit touched down on Earth at Kashgar, Xingjiang, China.

Shortly after the BETA Hive landing unit had made landfall on April 19th, 1973, military forces of the PRC were sequentially activated to investigate and secure the landing location;[1] the UN Forces offered their aid, but were refused by the PRC, who wished to monopolize the cache of alien resources for themselves.[2] With the air force and army working in tandem, the PRC forces advanced to within several kilometers of the landing site; however, 19 days after the start of the mission, the subsequent appearance of the Laser-class BETA ended all aerial support and turned the tide of battle against the PRC's remaining land forces.[1]

Forced into retreat, the PRC forces regrouped, and in concert with Soviet units requested as aid by the PRC government, launched Operation Hongqi, the first human attempt at Hive capture, against the Kashgar Hive, which was Phase 1 at that time.[3] However, faced with the overwhelming resource advantages of the BETA, and completely stripped of air support, the goal of Hive capture was abandoned after 9 days of battle; instead it was decided that the BETA would be exterminated with nuclear weapons.[3]

Ultimately, the secondary goal of BETA extermination remained unfulfilled as well, and the surviving Chinese/Soviet units were forced to employ scorched-earth tactics with nuclear weapons in order to cover their retreat.[3]

The failure to contain the BETA within Kashgar would mark the beginning of their proliferation across the majority of Asia and the whole of Eurasia, shaping the world for the next three decades in the conflict known as the BETA War. The landing unit would later be named as H01, the Kashgar Hive.

Chinese/Soviet tactics had an impact on future operations as well, notably on the later Athabasca Incident[4] and Operation Palaiologos[5].

A second operation, Operation Ouka, would be implemented against the Kashgar Hive on December 31st/January 1st, 2001.

  • The namesake of the operation is a reference to the historical red flag associated with communism; in this context, pitting the nation run by the Communist Party of China against the BETA.
